Dental insurance no waiting period coverage usually applies to preventive care, like cleanings and exams, from day one. Fillings, crowns and other bigger work often have a wait.

A few plans skip waiting periods entirely, and some waive them if you had dental coverage before. Here's how waiting periods work and which plans start fastest. Questions? Call 888-730-6031.

Key Takeaways
  • Most individual dental plans cover cleanings and checkups from the first day.
  • Basic and major services often have waiting periods that vary by plan and state.
  • UnitedHealthcare DentalWise has no waiting period for preventive, basic or most major care.
  • Day-one major care often pays less at first. DentalWise pays 15% in year one, then 50%.
  • Cigna's Advance plans also list no waiting periods for any class of service.
  • Prior dental coverage can waive some waiting periods if there's no long gap.
  • Orthodontia and implant waits usually can't be waived.

How Do Dental Waiting Periods Work?

A waiting period is the time between your plan's start date and the day it begins paying for a service. You pay premiums during the wait, but the plan won't cover that service yet.

HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adults. So, a plan that looks cheap may not help with a tooth that needs work this month.

Service typeExamplesCommon waiting period rule

BasicFillings, simple extractionsMay have a wait, depending on the plan

Dental Insurance No Waiting Period Options by Carrier

Several carriers Vivna works with offer dental insurance no waiting period benefits for preventive care. However, only some plans skip waits on bigger services too.

Cigna's dental line continues even though Cigna is leaving the health marketplace. Learn more on our Cigna dental and vision plans page, or see Aflac supplemental options.

Here's the catch with any no-wait plan. Day-one coverage for major work usually pays a smaller share at first. For example, DentalWise pays 15% of a covered crown in the first policy year and 50% after that. So, if your work can wait, a plan with a waiting period may pay more overall. Can Prior Coverage Waive a Dental Waiting Period?

Sometimes, yes. Some carriers waive waits on basic and major care if you had similar dental coverage recently.

Cigna, for example, may waive Class 2 and Class 3 waiting periods for an individual member. To qualify, the application must show 12 or more months of prior dental coverage that included major restorative care. Also, no more than 63 days can pass between the old plan and the new one.

  • Keep proof: save a letter or card from your old dental plan.
  • Avoid long gaps: start the new plan before the old one ends.
  • Check what the old plan covered: prior plans without major care may not count.
  • Plan around exceptions: Cigna doesn't waive orthodontia or implant waits.

Waiver rules differ by carrier and state, so ask before you cancel your current plan. Our Cigna dental FAQ library answers more plan questions.

Do Marketplace Dental Plans Have Waiting Periods?

They can, for adults. Separate dental plans sold on the marketplace may have waiting periods before they cover adult services.

Dental coverage is an essential health benefit for children, but not for adults. Also, you can buy a marketplace dental plan only when you buy a health plan at the same time. Open Enrollment runs November 1 to January 15, so it's a good time to compare.

Outside the marketplace, you can buy many individual dental plans year-round, including dental insurance no waiting period options. Our individual dental insurance page lists the carriers we offer.

How Do You Choose Dental Coverage That Starts Fast?

A dental plan that starts right away matters most if you need care soon. Start with what you need in the next six months. Then match the plan's waiting periods to that care.

  1. Only need cleanings? Most plans cover preventive care on day one.
  2. Need a filling or crown soon? Look for dental coverage with no waiting period on basic or major care.
  3. Switching plans? Ask whether your prior coverage can waive the wait.
  4. Check the yearly maximum: a low cap can run out after one major procedure.
  5. Confirm your dentist: make sure they're in the plan's network.

Dental Insurance No Waiting Period FAQs

Is immediate dental coverage more expensive?

Often, plans with no waits on major care cost more each month. That's because the insurer pays for bigger work sooner.

Still, a higher premium can cost less overall if you need a crown or root canal soon. Compare the premium, the yearly maximum and the coinsurance for the work you expect.

Do waiting periods restart if I switch dental plans?

They can. A new plan usually has its own waiting periods unless the carrier waives them for prior coverage.

Before you switch, ask the new carrier about its waiver rules. Then keep your old plan active until the new one starts, so you don't create a gap.

Can a dentist's discount plan replace day-one dental coverage?

A discount plan isn't insurance. Instead, it gives you reduced prices at participating dentists, and you pay the rest yourself.

Some people use one as a short bridge while an insurance waiting period runs out. Our dental insurance FAQ library explains the difference in more detail.
