Coconut Creek coverage before Medicare usually means a Marketplace plan for anyone without job coverage, from self-employed workers to adults nearing 65. Florida uses HealthCare.gov, so a tax credit can lower your premium if you earn under 400% of the poverty line. However, age raises the list price, so adults 50 to 64 should price plans with extra care.
- ACA plans can charge an older adult up to three times what a young adult pays, but never more for a health condition.
- For 2027 coverage, your share of the benchmark Silver plan tops out at 10.22% of income, no matter your age, if you earn up to 400% of the poverty line.
- Above $63,840 for one person or $86,560 for a couple, the credit stops and you pay the full age-based price.
- Cigna and Molina are leaving Florida's individual Marketplace for 2027, so their members must choose a new plan.
- Marketplace coverage doesn't end on its own when Medicare starts, so you must end it yourself.
Coconut Creek coverage before Medicare: who needs it
Coconut Creek sits in northern Broward, between Coral Springs and Pompano Beach. It's also a short drive from our Deerfield Beach office, so we hear from local callers often. Most of them are self-employed, raising kids or retiring before 65. For a general look at every plan type in the city, see our Coconut Creek plans and quotes page.
One in five residents is already 65 or older, so many neighbors are close behind. That's why this guide spends extra time on the years from 50 to 64. For example, premiums climb with age, and many people retire before a job plan would carry them to 65. Also, retirement income counts differently than a paycheck.
Families and younger workers
Families have options too. For instance, kids under 19 can use Florida KidCare, and our Coral Springs family coverage guide walks through it. Meanwhile, if you work closer to the coast, our Pompano Beach local coverage guide covers the same Broward plans.
Doctors and hospitals near Coconut Creek
Before you compare prices, list the doctors and hospitals you want to keep. Nearby choices include HCA Florida Northwest Hospital in Margate and Broward Health Coral Springs. However, no plan includes every Broward hospital. So check each name in the plan's own directory, or use our tool to search each carrier's network.
Marketplace plans for Coconut Creek coverage before Medicare
For most people without job coverage, a Marketplace plan is the safest Coconut Creek coverage before Medicare. That's because ACA plans can't turn you down or charge you more for a pre-existing condition. They also cover 10 essential health benefits, including prescriptions and hospital care. Florida uses HealthCare.gov, so you can enroll there or through a licensed agent at no extra cost.
Why the credit grows from ages 50 to 64
Here's the part many early retirees miss. Insurers can charge an older adult up to three times what a young adult pays. However, your tax credit is based on the price of the benchmark Silver plan for your age. Meanwhile, your share is a percent of income. So as the list price rises with age, the credit rises with it, and your share stays the same.
Carriers selling Coconut Creek health plans
For 2026, Broward Marketplace carriers included Ambetter, Oscar, UnitedHealthcare and the state's Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, plus some regional HMOs. However, the 2027 lineup is shorter.
- Cigna individual medical plans end on December 31, 2026.
- Molina is leaving Florida's individual Marketplace for 2027.
- So don't count on either one as your plan next year.
Florida's coverage gap for low-income retirees
Florida did not expand Medicaid. As a result, if your income falls under the poverty line and you don't fit Florida's current Medicaid rules, you get no tax credit at all. That can happen to early retirees who live on savings and report very little income. So plan IRA withdrawals with this line in mind, and ask us to check every program before you apply.
A licensed Vivna agent can estimate your income, price Marketplace plans with your credit and check your doctors, at no cost to you.
Private Coconut Creek health plans and COBRA
A Marketplace plan isn't the only choice. Depending on your job, your spouse and your income, one of these may fit better for a while.
- Same doctors and deductible progress
- You pay the full premium plus a fee
- No tax credit, and it ends after a set time
- Tax credit if you earn under 400% of the poverty line
- Covers pre-existing conditions
- Lasts until Medicare, year after year
Losing job coverage opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period for a Marketplace plan. However, if you pick COBRA and later drop it outside Open Enrollment, you generally can't switch until the next Open Enrollment. So compare both before you sign the COBRA form. Our guide to retiring before 65 goes deeper.
Private plans and a spouse's job plan
If you earn over 400% of the poverty line, you can also buy an ACA plan straight from a carrier. It has the same protections, but no credit. Alternatively, a working spouse's job plan may cover you, and it's often worth pricing first. Compare ACA and private plans side by side to see where you land.
Short-term and tri-term bridges
Florida allows short-term and tri-term plans, and Vivna offers both here. A healthy 60-year-old might use one to cover a few months, for example between a job ending and a new plan starting. Tri-term plans, meanwhile, can last up to about three years. UnitedHealthcare offers both kinds in Florida.
Short-term and tri-term plans are not ACA-compliant. They ask health questions, can exclude pre-existing conditions and don't qualify for subsidies. In your 50s and 60s, that exclusion risk matters more, so read every limit before you buy.
If you're healthy and over the income line, compare short-term medical plans we quote and tri-term plans that last up to three years with a full-price ACA plan.
Supplemental, dental and vision
Supplemental plans pay cash on top of major medical coverage. So they help when a high deductible meets a hospital stay or a serious diagnosis. They never replace a health plan, though.
- Hospital indemnity plans pay a set amount for covered stays.
- Critical illness plans pay a lump sum after a covered diagnosis.
- Accident plans help with ER visits and fractures.
- Dental and vision plans cover cleanings, exams and glasses.
Dental deserves a close look in your 50s and 60s. Original Medicare generally doesn't cover routine dental care or glasses, so a dental plan you start now can carry on past 65. We work with Aflac, Mutual of Omaha, Allstate Health Solutions and ManhattanLife, and Cigna dental plans continue for 2027. Browse hospital and critical illness cash plans or dental and vision plans.
Coconut Creek coverage before Medicare, compared
Start with the row that matches your situation. Then get quotes for the top two.
| Option | Best fit | Pre-existing conditions | Tax credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace plan | Most adults without job coverage, especially under 400% of the poverty line | Covered | Yes, if you qualify |
| Private ACA plan | Higher earners who want a certain network | Covered | No |
| COBRA | Mid-treatment patients who need the same doctors | Covered | No |
| Spouse's job plan | Couples with one spouse still working | Covered | No |
| Short-term or tri-term | Healthy people who need a bridge | Can be excluded | No |
In short, a Marketplace plan fits most Coconut Creek callers in their 50s and early 60s. Still, COBRA can make sense if you're in the middle of treatment.
What Coconut Creek coverage costs before Medicare
Your premium depends on age, ZIP code, tobacco use and metal level. Then your income sets your credit. Here's how the numbers stack up for 2027 coverage.
Your share at ages 50 to 64
This table shows the most you'd pay for the benchmark Silver plan, based on IRS figures. Because your share is tied to income, it's the same at 52 or 64.
| Poverty level | Single income | Single, monthly | Couple income | Couple, monthly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 250% | $39,900 | $288 | $54,100 | $390 |
| 300% | $47,880 | $408 | $64,920 | $553 |
| 400% | $63,840 | $544 | $86,560 | $737 |
Example: a retired couple at 62
Take a made-up Coconut Creek couple, both 62, with $70,000 of expected income for 2027. That's about 323% of the poverty line for two. So their share of the benchmark plan is 10.22% of income, or about $596 a month. Now suppose a large IRA withdrawal pushes them to $90,000. Then they're over the $86,560 line, so they lose the whole credit and pay the full age-based price.
What counts as income
For Marketplace savings, include both taxable and non-taxable Social Security. Also include most IRA and 401(k) withdrawals. However, qualified distributions from a designated Roth account don't count. So the timing of each withdrawal can change your credit.
Moving to Medicare at 65
Your Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare lasts seven months. It starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after it. If you miss it, you may have to wait and pay late enrollment penalties.
- Sign up for Medicare on time
Use your Initial Enrollment Period so coverage starts without a gap.
- End your Marketplace plan yourself
It doesn't stop on its own. Update your application with your Medicare start date.
- Keep a younger spouse covered
Remove only the person moving to Medicare, so your spouse keeps the plan.
Timing matters for money too, because your coverage until Medicare should end the day before Medicare begins. Once you're eligible for premium-free Part A, you can't get Marketplace savings, so a plan you keep would cost full price. Neighbors to the north face the same math, and our Boca Raton guide for retiring before Medicare runs more examples.
Call us about six months before your last day of work. With your pension, Social Security and IRA plans in hand, we can estimate your Marketplace income and flag the 400% line before you hit it. Then we set a reminder for your Medicare window, so nothing overlaps.

Coconut Creek coverage before Medicare: FAQs
Which Coconut Creek coverage fits early retirees?
Most early retirees here use a Marketplace plan, because it covers pre-existing conditions and can come with a tax credit. Some keep COBRA for a while, especially during treatment. Others join a working spouse's job plan. Healthy people over the income line sometimes compare a short-term or tri-term plan, which isn't ACA-compliant and can exclude pre-existing conditions.
Does retirement income count for Marketplace savings?
Yes, most of it does. You include taxable and non-taxable Social Security, pensions, and most IRA and 401(k) withdrawals. However, qualified distributions from a designated Roth account don't count. Because of that, planning withdrawals can help keep your income under 400% of the poverty line and protect your credit.
Can I keep COBRA until I turn 65?
Only if your COBRA period lasts that long, and it often doesn't. COBRA ends after a set time, and you pay the full premium plus a fee. Also, dropping COBRA early outside Open Enrollment usually won't open a Special Enrollment Period. So compare a Marketplace plan within 60 days of losing job coverage.
What happens to my Marketplace plan when I get Medicare?
Nothing happens automatically. You must end your Marketplace coverage yourself, and you can't get Marketplace savings once you're eligible for premium-free Part A. So update your application with your Medicare start date. If your spouse is younger, remove only yourself, and your spouse can keep the plan.
Can I get Coconut Creek coverage with a health condition?
Yes. ACA plans can't turn you down or charge more because of a health condition. They can, however, charge more because of age, up to three times a young adult's price. A tax credit offsets much of that if you earn under 400% of the poverty line, so get a quote with your credit first.
