Ambetter pros and cons come down to perks and price help versus network limits. On the plus side, you get full ACA protections, subsidy-eligible plans, Silver plans with $0 preferred insulin in some states and up to $500 in rewards. On the minus side, most plans pay only in network, Value plans need referrals, and complaint data in at least one state runs above average.
- Ambetter is Centene's Marketplace brand, and Centene reported 3,494,700 Marketplace members on June 30, 2026, down from 5,862,800 a year earlier.
- Ambetter advantages include ACA protections, condition-focused Silver plans, 24/7 virtual care and up to $500 in My Health Pays rewards.
- The main drawbacks are in-network-only coverage, referral rules on Value plans and above-average complaint data in Kansas.
- In Kansas, the insurer behind Ambetter posted a 2024 complaint index of 2.29, where 1.00 matches its share of the market.
- Ambetter's Marketplace plans end in Delaware and New Hampshire on December 31, 2026.
Is Ambetter Good Insurance? The Quick Verdict
Yes, for the right person. Ambetter works well when your doctors are in its network and you want a Marketplace plan that qualifies for subsidies. However, it's a weaker fit when you travel often or want coverage outside a network. Here are the Ambetter pros and cons side by side.
- Full ACA protections, so pre-existing conditions are covered
- Tax credits and Silver savings when your income qualifies
- $0 preferred insulin on some Silver plans
- Up to $500 in rewards for healthy activities
- Phone and video care at any hour
- Coverage in network only, except emergencies
- Referrals to see specialists on Value plans
- Networks that can change during the year
- Above-average complaints in Kansas data
- Plans leaving two states after 2026

Who Runs Ambetter, and Where It Sells
Ambetter Health belongs to Centene Corporation, a Fortune 500 health company. Centene also runs Medicaid plans and sells Medicare plans under the Wellcare name. So Ambetter is the part of Centene that sells individual and family plans under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Our Ambetter Health carrier overview covers the company in more depth.
Size cuts both ways, though. A big carrier signs contracts with many doctors, yet it can also leave a market. Centene's Marketplace membership fell from 5,862,800 to 3,494,700 in the year ending June 30, 2026. Also, Ambetter will stop selling Marketplace plans in Delaware's individual market and New Hampshire's individual market on December 31, 2026. That exit is one of the Ambetter pros and cons that depends on where you live.
If you live in either state, pick a new plan by December 15 so coverage starts January 1. Everywhere else, confirm your county's 2027 lineup when Open Enrollment opens November 1.
Ambetter Advantages: What It Does Well
Ambetter's strengths show up most for people who qualify for help with premiums or who manage a long-term condition. Here are the Ambetter advantages that matter on real calls.
Full ACA protections and subsidy access
Every Ambetter Marketplace plan covers the ten essential health benefits. It also can't deny you or charge you more for a health condition. Plus, plans sold on the Marketplace qualify for premium tax credits if your income fits. On a Silver plan, cost-sharing reductions can lower your deductible too. See our guide to premium tax credits and extra savings to check your income.
Plans built around chronic conditions
This is where Ambetter stands out. Its Premier Silver Comprehensive Diabetes Care plan offers $0 copays for preferred insulin and select medications, plus some diabetic supplies. For 2026, it sold in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. A similar asthma and COPD plan sold in Kentucky, North Carolina and Oklahoma. Our guide to coverage choices for people with diabetes covers what else to compare.
Rewards and round-the-clock virtual care
Members can earn up to $500 through My Health Pays for activities like an annual well visit, certain screenings and online challenges. Then you can spend the balance on several everyday costs:
- Monthly premiums, except in Arizona and Nevada
- Doctor copays, deductibles and coinsurance, which add up fast
- Some utility, phone, rent and transportation bills too
Ambetter also offers Virtual 24/7 Care, so you can reach a licensed provider by phone or video at any hour. Cost sharing may apply, so check your plan's copay before your first call.
Options when your employer gives an allowance
Ambetter Health Solutions plans sell outside the Marketplace for people with an ICHRA or QSEHRA. Those are accounts an employer uses to repay you for your own health plan. So if your job offers one, ask us whether Solutions plans sell in your state.
A licensed Vivna agent can check your doctors and prescriptions against every Ambetter plan in your county, then compare other carriers, at no cost to you.
Ambetter Drawbacks: Where Members Get Stuck
Most complaints we hear about any carrier trace back to networks and paperwork. Ambetter is no different. Here are the Ambetter drawbacks to weigh before you enroll.
Coverage stays in network, outside emergencies
Ambetter's own disclaimer warns that if you see an out-of-network provider, you may owe the entire bill unless state or federal law says otherwise. For emergencies, the federal No Surprises Act shields you from surprise out-of-network bills. For planned care, though, you need to stay in network. Learn how in-network and out-of-network costs differ before you book care.
Referrals and smaller networks on some plans
Value plans assign you a primary care provider, and you need a referral for most specialist care. Ambetter sold Value plans only in certain Florida and Texas counties for 2026. Select plans skip referrals, but they use a smaller, exclusive network. Read how to search the Ambetter doctor and hospital directory for your plan family.
Networks can shift during the year
Ambetter notes that its in-network providers can change throughout the year. Also, a doctor working inside an in-network hospital may still be out of network. So confirm both the doctor and the hospital before any planned procedure.
Call the doctor's billing office, not just the front desk, and ask if they take your exact Ambetter plan family, such as Premier or Value. Then write down the date and the name of the person you spoke with. If a claim goes wrong later, that note helps your appeal.
Ambetter drawbacks in the rewards fine print
- Rewards can't pay pharmacy copays in most states.
- Members in Arizona and Nevada can't put rewards toward premiums.
- Any unused balance disappears the moment your coverage ends.
If Ambetter denies a claim or a prior authorization, you have the right to appeal. Ask for the denial in writing, note the deadline, and follow our step-by-step claim appeal guide.
Ambetter Complaint Data and Quality Ratings
Complaint ratios are one of the few hard numbers on carrier service. Many state insurance departments publish a complaint index. It divides a company's share of complaints by its share of business, so 1.00 means complaints match its size. Above 1.00 means more complaints than its size would predict.
In Kansas, Celtic Insurance Company underwrites Ambetter from Sunflower Health Plan. The Kansas Insurance Department's 2024 report gave Celtic 173 health complaints and an index of 2.29. That's still above average, but it improved from 3.64 in 2023.
To be fair, Ambetter isn't alone, since several large carriers scored above 1.00 in the same report. Also, one state's data can't predict your experience somewhere else. Our Kansas health insurance guide covers that market in detail.
How to check quality ratings yourself
HealthCare.gov shows a star rating for many Marketplace plans. It blends member experience, medical care and plan administration, such as customer service. New or small plans may not have a rating yet, which doesn't mean they're poor. So look for the stars when you window shop, and ask us to explain any low score.
Ambetter Pros and Cons at a Glance
Here is the whole picture in one table, plus the one thing to check for each factor.
| Factor | The upside | The downside | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network | Premier is Ambetter's broadest network, with no referrals | Pays in network only, except emergencies | Search every doctor and hospital you use |
| Price help | Marketplace plans qualify for tax credits | Lower-cost Value and Select plans sell in few counties | Get a quote for your ZIP code |
| Chronic care | $0 preferred insulin on some Silver plans | Sold in eight states for 2026 | Ask if your state has it |
| Extras | Up to $500 in rewards and 24/7 virtual care | Rewards vanish when coverage ends | Read the reward rules |
| Stability | Large carrier with a wide footprint | Leaving Delaware and New Hampshire after 2026 | Confirm your 2027 county lineup |
| Service | Kansas complaint index improved in 2024 | Still above average in that report | Check star ratings and state data |
Use the last column as your checklist when you weigh Ambetter pros and cons against other quotes.

Ambetter Pros and Cons: FAQs
Is Ambetter good insurance for families?
It can be. Ambetter family plans cover pediatric care, maternity care and the other essential health benefits, and members can join the Start Smart for Your Baby pregnancy program. The catch is the network. So before you enroll, check every family member's doctors, including pediatricians and specialists. If one key doctor is out of network, compare another carrier first.
What are the biggest Ambetter drawbacks?
The biggest Ambetter drawbacks are network limits. Most plans pay only for in-network care outside emergencies, and Value plans require referrals. Also, the Kansas Insurance Department's 2024 complaint index for Ambetter's underwriter there was 2.29, above the 1.00 average. Finally, Ambetter's Marketplace plans end in Delaware and New Hampshire on December 31, 2026.
Is Ambetter the same as Medicaid?
No. Ambetter sells private Marketplace plans that you or a tax credit pays for each month. Its parent company, Centene, also runs Medicaid plans, which is why the names sometimes look alike. If your income is low, though, check Medicaid first, because it may cost you far less. We can help you see which program fits.
Does Ambetter cover out-of-network care?
In most cases, no. Ambetter warns that out-of-network providers can bill you for the entire cost unless state or federal law says otherwise. Emergency care is the main exception, since the No Surprises Act protects you from surprise out-of-network bills. For everything else, stay in network and confirm providers before each visit.
Is Ambetter a legitimate insurance company?
Yes. Ambetter plans come from state-licensed insurers owned by Centene Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. Centene reported 3,494,700 Marketplace members on June 30, 2026. That said, a big name alone doesn't make it the right fit. Your doctors, drugs and budget still decide whether Ambetter works for you. Our library of Ambetter questions and answers covers more.
Can I switch away from Ambetter if I'm unhappy?
Yes, but timing matters. You can switch during Open Enrollment, which runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027 for 2027 coverage. Outside that window, you need a qualifying life event, such as moving or losing other coverage. Read our guide on changing health plans the right way before you cancel anything.
