Pompano Beach small business health insurance doesn't have to mean an expensive group plan. Local owners now have three main paths: a traditional group plan, an ICHRA or a QSEHRA. Each one fits a different size and budget. This guide explains how each one works and what it costs. It also shows which fits a shop, crew or office in Pompano Beach.
- Florida small group plans serve employers with 1 to 50 employees.
- An ICHRA lets you give employees a tax-free allowance for their own plans.
- A QSEHRA is a simpler option for employers with fewer than 50 employees.
- Owners with no employees buy individual coverage and may deduct premiums.
- Very small employers may qualify for a federal tax credit on group premiums.
Three ways Pompano Beach employers offer coverage
Pompano Beach runs on small businesses. Marinas, restaurants, contractors, salons and real estate offices line Atlantic Boulevard and Federal Highway. Most have fewer than 20 people, and many can't afford a big group plan. Fortunately, newer options let owners help with coverage on a set budget.
In short, here's how they differ. First, a group plan gives everyone the same plan. By contrast, an ICHRA or QSEHRA gives each employee money to buy their own plan. The right fit depends on your headcount, budget and how much paperwork you want.
Traditional small group plans
With a group plan, you pick one or more plans from a single insurer. Then employees join, and you pay part of the premium. In Florida, businesses with 1 to 50 employees buy in the small group market.
Also, group plans feel familiar to job seekers, which helps with hiring. However, insurers often require a minimum share of employees to enroll. Many also require you to pay a set share of the premium. Rates can rise at renewal, too, and one network has to work for everyone.
When a group plan makes sense
- Most of your team lives near the same hospitals.
- You want one simple plan to explain to new hires.
- Enough employees will enroll to meet participation rules.
- You can budget for premium increases at renewal.
ICHRA: a tax-free allowance for individual plans
An individual coverage HRA, or ICHRA, flips the model. HealthCare.gov now also calls it a CHOICE arrangement. First, you set a monthly allowance. Then employees buy their own individual plans. After that, you reimburse premiums up to that amount, tax-free.
Employers of any size can offer one. You can also set different allowances for classes of workers, such as full-time and part-time staff. Within a class, amounts can vary only by age and family size. However, each employee must have individual health coverage to use the money.
A simple budget example
Say a Pompano Beach marine repair shop has five employees. The owner sets a $400 monthly allowance for each worker. That's $2,000 a month, or $24,000 a year, and the cost never jumps at renewal. Each worker then picks a plan that fits their doctors and family. Allowances are generally tax-deductible for the business and tax-free for employees.
How an ICHRA affects tax credits
This part matters for your team. If your offer is considered affordable, employees can't get a Marketplace tax credit. When it isn't affordable, they can choose the credit instead, but not both. Affordability compares the cheapest silver plan, after your allowance, with the employee's income.
You also need to give a written notice at least 90 days before each plan year. Our ICHRA and enrollment FAQs answer common setup questions.
Pair an ICHRA with bronze plans if your team is mostly healthy. IRS guidance lets bronze plans work with an HSA, even when bought off the exchange. Employees then save pre-tax money for the deductible.

QSEHRA: a simple option for under 50 employees
Next, consider a qualified small employer HRA, or QSEHRA. It works much like an ICHRA. You give employees a tax-free allowance for health costs. However, it comes with a few more limits.
- You must have fewer than 50 full-time equivalent employees.
- Group health plans can't be offered alongside it.
- Every full-time W-2 employee must get the offer.
- Yearly allowances are capped by the IRS.
The current IRS caps are $6,450 a year for self-only coverage and $13,100 for family coverage. These limits usually rise each year. Unlike an ICHRA, a QSEHRA reduces an employee's tax credit dollar for dollar. So it works best when your allowance is generous enough to matter.
Owner-only businesses in Pompano Beach
In fact, many local businesses are just the owner. For example, think of boat captains, contractors, realtors and consultants. Without at least one employee, you usually can't buy a small group plan. Instead, you buy an individual plan like anyone else.
The good news is you may qualify for a Marketplace tax credit based on your net income. Better still, self-employed people can often deduct their health premiums. Our self-employed health insurance tax deduction guide walks through the rules. For plan choices, see our self-employed health insurance options.
The small business health care tax credit
Very small employers may get a federal credit for group coverage. To qualify, you generally need fewer than 25 full-time equivalent employees. Average wages must also fall under an IRS limit. In addition, you must pay at least half of employee-only premiums. The plan must be bought through the SHOP Marketplace.
In the best case, the credit covers up to half of your premium costs. You can claim it for two years in a row. So ask your tax preparer whether your numbers qualify before you choose a path.

Local hospitals to check
Whatever Pompano Beach small business health insurance you choose, check that networks fit where your team lives. For example, Broward Health North sits right in Pompano Beach. Holy Cross Health is a short drive south in Fort Lauderdale. Many employees also commute from Deerfield Beach, Coconut Creek or Boca Raton.
With an ICHRA or QSEHRA, each person can pick a plan that covers their own doctors. Have them search doctors by carrier before they enroll. Our Pompano Beach city guide covers local plan types and costs.

Pompano Beach small business health insurance: FAQs
Can a two-person business in Pompano Beach get a group plan?
Often, yes, if at least one person is a non-owner employee. Insurers set their own participation and contribution rules, so compare quotes.
Is an ICHRA better than a group plan?
It depends. An ICHRA gives you fixed costs and lets employees pick their own networks. A group plan is simpler for teams that want one shared plan.
Can I offer a QSEHRA to part-time workers?
You may include them, but you must offer it to all full-time W-2 employees.
Can I use these accounts for just myself?
Generally, no. HRAs are for employees, not solo owners without staff. Owners alone usually buy an individual plan and deduct premiums.
