Cigna Choice Fund is a health account your employer pairs with a Cigna medical plan, usually Open Access Plus or a PPO. It comes as a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA). The account pays your share of covered costs, such as deductibles, prescriptions, and many dental and vision expenses. Unused money can carry over to the next year. The big difference: you own an HSA and keep it if you leave your job, while your employer owns an HRA.
- Cigna Choice Fund pairs an Open Access Plus or PPO plan with an HSA or HRA.
- An HSA requires a qualifying high-deductible plan. For 2027, you can save up to $4,500 for yourself or $9,000 for a family.
- HRA money comes from your employer, and the employer's rules decide what carries over.
- With AutoPay, the account can pay eligible claims for you automatically.
How Cigna Choice Fund Works
First, you get medical coverage through your Cigna plan. Then, a separate account helps pay the costs the plan doesn't. For instance, it can cover your deductible, coinsurance and pharmacy costs.
- AutoPay. The account can pay eligible claims automatically. Once it runs out, your doctor bills you directly.
- Debit card. You can pay at the pharmacy or doctor's office with a card. Cigna suggests waiting for the claim to process on deductible-based plans.
- Rollover. Unused HSA dollars stay yours. Many HRAs also let money carry over to the next year.
Cigna Choice Fund HSA vs. HRA
| Feature | HSA | HRA |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the money | You | Your employer |
| Who puts money in | You, your employer or both | Your employer only |
| Needs a high-deductible plan | Yes | No |
| Keep it if you leave your job | Yes | Usually no |
| Tax benefits | Pre-tax in, tax-free growth and qualified spending | Tax-free to you |
| 2027 contribution limit | $4,500 self-only; $9,000 family | Set by your employer |
An HSA can also be invested and saved for future medical costs, even in retirement. That makes it one of the best tax breaks available. Learn more in how deductibles work, since HSA plans always have a higher deductible.
If your employer adds money to an HSA, take it. That's free money that stays with you, even if you change jobs next year.
Is a Choice Fund Plan a PPO or HMO?
Choice Fund isn't a network type. Instead, it's the account that sits on top of your medical plan. Most Choice Fund plans use an Open Access Plus or PPO network, so they work like a PPO: no referrals and some out-of-network coverage.

Tips to Get the Most From Cigna Choice Fund
- Turn on AutoPay. Claims get paid without extra steps.
- Keep receipts. You may need proof that a purchase was eligible.
- Contribute early. With an HSA, a steady payroll deduction builds your balance.
- Plan around the reset. Deductibles usually start over each plan year. Read when deductibles start over.
- Check before you leave a job. Use HRA money before you go, since you usually can't take it with you.
